Only after the last tree has been cut down;
Only after the last fish has been caught;
Only after the last river has been poisoned;
Only then will you realize that money cannot be eaten.

When I live till 75 and on wheelchair....

(c) Forest Ang

..........If I want safety I would choose to stay in the comfort of my home........

The opening of the National Park(NP) in Penang is causing a lot of destruction to nature. I saw kids killing a harmless snake and tour operators burning rubbish under the trees, of course the trees die.

The problem I see is that people expect NP to accommodate everybody. They feel they need to accommodate casual strollers, little boys, grandma & grandpa, wheelchair users and unfit first time tourists.

It will be great to let everybody - old and young, healthy and not so healthy, to enjoy and to appreciate nature, but come on, let's be realistic.

If Mount Kinabalu (the highest mountain in South East Asia) is in Penang, chances are, we will get cable car and road, up the summit, so that, everyone, you and me, young and old, can enjoy the fun of getting to the peak of Mt Kinabalu. Isn't it ridiculous? (Ironically, there was a plan to build one from Penang National Park to Penang Hill).

If I'm 75 years old and on a wheelchair, I should know I probably cannot make a hike. That is why, I will choose not to go to such wilderness places.

Our taman-taman, youth park, esplanade and botanic gardens are more suitable places for me. I don't whine and complain, so that Penang NP has to build a new road because of me.

I know if I go to forested area, safety and accident can happened to me. I don't whine and complain, so that Penang NP has to build a new road to transport me out during emergency. If I want safety I would choose to stay in the comfort of my home.

Go to the places that you can handle. Don't complain if you can't. For if you complaint, chances are the authority will be building more infrastructures just to accommodate your request. There is no concern about the flora and fauna. The 'want' of human is more important than the welfare of flora and fauna.

(Ed : In the draft plan, a road will be built into Pantai Kerachut for emergency evacuation. The road will pass through steep terrain and head streams. I can foresee the problem of mud flow and erosion. The meromictic lake could be destroyed by the silting. Dec. '05)
