OF SWEAT, SALT AND VITAMIN C

İ by Forest Ang

......Common salt is the antidote for cramp.....

Have you ever wonder why some outdoor persons are more prone to muscle cramps?

During one of my cycling trip in 1991, I noticed my friend kept yelling because of bicep muscle cramps. We were on the same route, eating the same food and using the same energy. One thing that is not the same is the drinking water. He added orange juice powder to his drink!

I told him to drink only water but he ignored my plead. And so he had to suffer a few more round of cramps.

In the end, he took my advise. Wahlau, cramp no more....

There was another case in Taman Negara where we have 2 groups of participants going on rubber tubings. The first group took their lunch with orange juice while the second group with red syrup drink. Guess what? About 30% of the first group suffered cramps. Surprisingly nobody from the second group got it.

Tips for Outdoor Activities:

  1. Don't drink or take vitamin C prior to physical activities.
  2. If you know you are prone to cramps, do take a pince of salt with your drinking water.
  3. If you sweat alot, do balance your intake of salt.

Take care!
