Air Hitam Dalam Educational Forest
Sungai Dua, Butterworth, Penang
Air Hitam Dalam Educational Forest or popularly known as Air Hitam Dalam Recreational Forest is a fresh water swamp with a size of approximately 11 hectres. Air Hitam Dalam literally means Deep Black Water. The name could probably meant the river beside this park was deep and bottomless.
The park is situated in the Seberang Perai North District of Penang or North Province Wellesley. It takes about 25 minutes from Butterworth town to reach the park.
Facilities available are Walkway, resthut, hanging bridge, observation towers, toilet and shed.

You will be able to see various species of flora and fauna in the Air Hitam Dalam Recreational Forest. Among the fauna seen are two species of monkey namely - Long-tailed macaque and Dusky Leaf monkey, otters, water monitor lizards as huge as a baby crocodile, squirrels and birds.
Air Hitam Dalam Recreational Forest is a small park but has the richest number of species of avifauna. Many are rarely seen in other part of Penang. Many good photographers have shot great pictures of birds from this wetland forest.
The commonest species of tree are Putat (a common ulam), ficus, jangkang and nipah tree.

How to go to Air Hitam Dalam Educational Park
Air Hitam Dalam Educational Park is accessed from the North-South Highway. If you are travelling from the South, you should head north passing Seberang Jaya (Butterworth). Before reaching the Sungai Dua Tol, there is an exit. Take the exit and head to Sungai Dua town. After passing Sungai Dua town, some 2 km, you will notice a signboard, "Air Hitam Dalam". Turn right and ask around the villagers and they will be able to direct you to the park.
Note : A new access road is being built and new signboards have not been put up.
