Basic Itinerary to Maliau Basin

This is the original Itinerary provided by Yayasan Sabah.

Day 1. Pick up guest at Tawau/Hotel (Please let us know your flight details or name of Hotel where you want us to pick you). Journey will take about 4-5 hours to reach Maliau Basin Security Gate. Get your entry permit at the gatehouse and proceed to Agathis Camp where you will stay overnight. After dinner, enjoy a night drive in search for nocturnal animals through the 27km access road along Agathis Camp to Belian Camp (subject to weather condition) Possible sightings of sambar deer, bearded pig, malay civet, banting, porcupine and flying squirrel.

Day 2. Wake up by the call of Borneon Gibbon as part of the morning chorus in the Rainforest. After breakfast, 8.00 a.m. begin trekking into the Basin for Camel Trophy. The trek will go through a steep ascend of the formidable Maliau Basin escarpment,(first 2 hours of trekking is quite challenging) and into a gentle slope of inner Basin. Vegetation varies from the Lowland Dipterocarp, Highland Dipterocarp forest and further into the Heath forest. Break for a packed lunch at the “Sabung Ayam” rest station. While trekking towards Camel Trophy Camp (CTC) enjoy the varieties of plants, orchids and other beautiful flowers along the trail. Overnight at CTC.

Day 3. After breakfast, day trek to the nearby waterfalls, Takob-Takob and Giluk falls (so called the Terrace Garden of Maliau) Enjoy swimming and have your packed lunch here. Overnight at CTC.

Day 4. After breakfast, continue trekking to the Lobah Camp (LC), 6 hours journey to an adventurous hard trek through the dense Heath forest of Maliau Basin. Discover the abundance of Nepenthes plants growing beautifully from the floor of the heath forest to the treetop along the 'Jalan Babi'. Evening (if weather permits) enjoy the panoramic view of the MB rim at the Lobah Helipad, possible sighting of hornbill flying in pairs. Over night at LC, the most exciting of all, listening to the cry of wild in the wee hours or early morning, music serenading while you are still in bed which make one feels so relaxed and peaceful.

Day 5. Early morning, enjoy the sunrise at the Lobah Helipad. After breakfast, take along packed lunch, trek down to the spectacular Maliau Falls about 2 hours journey. Enjoy packed lunch at the Maliau Falls (Picnic). 15.30 hrs ascend back to Lobah Camp; take a break again at the helipad. Overnight at Lobah Camp.

Day 6. After breakfast, leave LC (7.00 a.m.) for AC. Journey will take about 6-8 hours. ETA at Agathis Camp in the evening. Overnight at Agathis Camp.

Day 7. After breakfast, pack and leave for Tawau. Please take the evening flight to avoid rush.
