The Dogs That Howl
© by Forest Ang
About 1989, when a close friend of mine passed away, she had a last wish. The wish to have her ashes scattered at the hill, in the jungle and at the sea.
The passion for hiking, camping, outdoor and diving had moulded my close friend to love nature to the extreme.
She was cremated. Her ashes were collected in a jar. Her family requested a friend to help disperse the ashes. After work, my friend took the furnicular train to Penang Hill to have a third of the ashes disperse at Crag Hotel. The ashes was thrown to the wind and blown into the wild.
Everything was normal.
The jar of ashes was placed in the backpack which my friend carried. My friend trekked down from Penang Hill using the jeep road to Botanic gardens. It was about 7.00 pm when he reached the bungalow called Grace Dieu. Grace Dieu was on the right of the jeep road. Immediately reaching the bungalow, the jeep road would made a 90 degree abrupt turn to the left.
About to reach the bungalow, the dogs were barking like crazy. Bark and bark and bark. There were at least 3 dogs at that time.
My friend headed down ignoring the barkings. As he trekked pass Grace Dieu, his backpack was then in full view of the barking dogs.....h o w l.....h o w l...............
No more barking. Instead the dogs howled. Howled and howled. Non stop howling... as if there was something behind the backpack.
Did the dogs see someone riding on the back?
Take care!
